Friends of Animals Humane Society
Friends of Animals Humane Society began in 1983 by two area women with a heart for lost, neglected, abandoned, and abused animals. For the first four years they worked in conjunction with Animal Allies, a humane society about 25 miles from Cloquet. At that time they had no buildings, so they and a few like-minded friends fostered all the animals that were turned in to them. In 1988, after they decided they could do this themselves independently of Animal Allies, they applied for and received 501(c)(3) status.
As they were growing, it became apparent that they needed a building to house the animals in one place, along with office space. After years of fundraising, Friends of Animals Humane Society had a building in 2001.
In the spirit of its founders, Friends of Animals has not stood still. We have been constantly improving our facilities. In 2007 we developed a surgical suite so spays and neuters could eventually be performed on site. Bringing dogs outside became much easier and more sanitary when we added twelve outdoor kennels on a concrete slab in 2008.
Our cats became happier and adoptions went up in 2009 with the addition of four “habicat” rooms. Ten to fifteen cats live in rooms with cushioned cubby holes, cardboard play boxes, cat trees, and toys. They do much better with the space and interaction. When someone is interested in adopting a cat, that person can go into the room and actually hold and pet the cat, or sit in a chair and see which comes for attention.
We thoroughly enjoy it when people come in and say, “Wow! I haven’t been here for a while. This place has really changed!” We hope to continue making this a safe haven for the lost, abused, abandoned and neglected animals of Carlton County, and to make it a welcoming place to find a new furry friend.
Oct 2016 a new building in downtown Cloquet was purchased. It is more than double the size of our current building. We are currently fundraising for remodeling and improvements.
The current plan is to be in our new shelter by May 1, 2017 with a grand opening to follow in the summer.
We are looking forward to our new building with updated facilities for our “fur babies”.
