Winter Pet Care

As the weather turns colder, please make sure that your companion animals are well protected from the elements. All animals deserve a warm, dry area out of the weather, fresh water and room to move. Older animals need even more care to assure that they do not get frostbite or suffer from weather-related illnesses. Check with your local humane society for guidelines on winter weather.

CUTS, BITES, PUNCTURE WOUNDS, ETC.

Gently clean the area with antibacterial soap and warm water.

HEAT STROKE

Watch for symptoms like excessive panting, collapse, a blank or "fixed" stare, even unconsciousness. Move the pet to a cool place, place in a cool bath or place cool towels on them, offer plenty of water and call a Veterinarian immediately.

BEE OR WASP STINGS

If the stinger is still the skin, remove it. Next wrap the affected area in a cool, damp cloth. Watch for severe reaction. Most pets recover quickly and only have slight irritation. Call your Veterinarianfor any further questions or concerns.

POISON

If you suspect your pet has gotten into any toxic chemicals or poison, CALL YOUR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT attempt to make your pet vomit. This may worsen the problem. Your Veterinarian can offer more assistance or ask you to bring the animal in.

Please follow these simple tips to keep you and your beloved pet safe in these summer months. Have a safe and happy summer!
